Maybe Billy and his stupid dog Bullhead were

mean enough to do it. But they couldn't have gotten

into the house.

No. It wasn't Billy and Bullhead.

Peter's words echoed in my head.

He's a bad dog. A bad dog.

Poocher!

Poocher must have destroyed Bilbo. Pulled him off

my bed. Ripped him apart with his teeth and claws.

Shredded him to pieces. And buried him in the yard.

It was horrible. But it was the only answer that

made sense.

Only—why?

Was Poocher jealous of my teddy bear?

Or was he just playing?

I gazed around the lawn. Poor Bilbo! My childhood

teddy bear! My best friend since I was a baby! Now

look at him!

Slowly I gathered the pieces together. The teddy

bear arms, teddy bear legs, teddy bear body . . .

Where was Bilbo's head?

I had a bad feeling. Slowly, I turned toward the

doghouse.

Poocher lay in the doorway. His head was lowered.

He was chewing something.

I tiptoed closer.

'Toocher?" I whispered.

Poocher raised his head and stared at me.

Clenched between his paws was Bilbo's head.

Poocher licked his chops and gnawed hungrily on

the chewed-up head of my teddy bear.
